My moment on "Oprah" - and
my brain was a blank screen!

What was I doing on Oprah, anyway?

I am tempted to say "making a fool of myself", but I wasn't really that bad. I was on her show to talk about Gary Zukav's book, Seat of the Soul. There were three other guests, as well as Gary, on the show. I wound up there because I had sent Gary an e-mail about his book in November of 1998. I frequently do that when I read something I like. I enjoyed hearing from people who liked my book, and I presume other writers usually feel the same way. Besides, I had read his first book, Dancing Wu Li Masters, many years before and admired the way he explained the "new physics". Gary showed my letter to Oprah, and she asked me to join him on her show.

I felt like I was there under false pretenses, in a way. The point Oprah wanted to make with this particular show was that the conepts in Gary's book can be used to enrich our lives, and transform our characters. I agree, but that is not quite the way it happened in my case. My own personal metanoia happened without the benefit of reading his book. My reason for writing him was to tell him that, based on my own independent experience, he was right about much of what he had to say.

The show was a lot of fun, though. Staying at the Omni, riding around in a limo, sandwiches in the "green room" - all of it was great fun. And meeting Oprah was a pleasure. She is brilliant, and a remarkable and lovely presence - the camera does not do her justice. And I was glad to be even a small part of getting a book like Gary's even more widely read than it had been. Gary's book as paints a picture of ourselves, and the universe, that is genuine food for thought. True, I find it appealing because I see in it an affirmation of some of my views, but Gary is good writer and you will find his ideas stimulating even if you cannot accept them.
